Wall Street Quant · Puzzles & Problems · question 34 of 155

You have two ropes and a lighter. Each rope takes exactly one hour to burn but they do not burn at a consistent rate (i.e., half the rope length-wise might burn in 20 minutes, while the other half might take 40 minutes). Using these two ropes, how do you measure exactly 45 minutes?

To measure exactly 45 minutes using the two ropes, follow these steps:

1. Light one end of the first rope (Rope A) and both ends of the second rope (Rope B) simultaneously.

2. Rope B will burn out in exactly 30 minutes (since it’s burning from both ends, it takes half the amount of time), while Rope A will still be burning for another 30 minutes.

3. Once Rope B has burned out (30 minutes elapsed), light the other end of Rope A.

4. Now, both ends of Rope A are burning, so it will take 15 more minutes for the rope to burn out completely.

5. The total time elapsed from the beginning will be 30 minutes (Rope B) + 15 minutes (Rope A) = 45 minutes.

Here is an illustration of this process:

Time 0: Rope A: |------------------| Rope B: |------------------|
Time 30 min: Rope A: |----------► | Rope B: X
Time 45 min: Rope A: X | Rope B: X

In this illustration, the arrow (►) represents the burning process, and the X represents the burned-out state of the ropes. The arrow’s position shows the burn rate and its direction. Note that the burn rate is not required to be uniform; the technique works regardless of the burn rate because we are using the concept of burning a rope from both ends simultaneously to have it burn in half of the original time.
