In distributed systems, ensuring consistency can be challenging due to possible failures and communication delays between nodes. Paxos is a consensus protocol designed to ensure consistency in a distributed system plagued with such failures.

The Paxos protocol decomposes the consensus problem into smaller sub-problems that can be solved in a simpler way. As a result, Paxos protocol is composed of three phases: proposal, preparation, and acceptance. The overall outcome of the Paxos protocol is an agreement on a single value to be chosen among a number of proposed values. Paxos protocol achieves this by guaranteeing that nodes are constantly communicating and negotiating among themselves until they reach a consensus.

In the proposal phase, a node requests a value to be agreed upon by the network. In the preparation phase, any node that has not seen any recent proposal receives the proposed value and broadcasts a request for agreement on that value. In the acceptance phase, all the nodes that received broadcast messages in the previous phase, decide to either agree to the proposed value or reject it. This decision is based upon examining the variety of proposals broadcasted in the past.

The algorithm’s execution is such that it can function correctly even when messages get lost or nodes crash. Paxos algorithm ensures consistency and fault-tolerance in distributed systems. If a node correctly handles message passing and the node is not faulty, the algorithm can guarantee various correctness properties. These include safety, which ensures that a value will only be decided once, and that all nodes agree on the same value, and liveness, which guarantees that a decision will eventually be made as long as no more than a third of nodes crash.

In conclusion, Paxos consensus algorithm is vital in modern distributed systems as it guarantees the consistency essential in such systems. By ensuring that all nodes agree on the same value, Paxos protocol ensures that the distributed system works correctly, despite communication failures or node failures.
