A financial statement is a document that shows the financial performance and position of a company over a period of time. The basic structure of a financial statement consists of four parts: the balance sheet, the income statement, the cash flow statement, and the statement of equity.

The balance sheet shows the assets, liabilities, and equity of the company at a specific point in time. It is divided into two sections: assets and liabilities & equity. The assets section shows what the company owns or controls, such as cash, investments, property, and inventory. The liabilities & equity section shows what the company owes, such as debts to creditors and shareholders’ equity.

The income statement shows the revenues, expenses, and profits of the company over a period of time, such as a quarter or year. It starts with the company’s revenue and subtracts the cost of goods sold and other expenses to arrive at net income. This statement helps investors understand the financial performance of the company, including how much money it is making and where that money is going.

The cash flow statement shows how the company’s cash balance changed over a period of time. It is broken down into three parts: operating activities, investing activities, and financing activities. Operating activities include the cash flows related to the company’s primary operations, such as sales and production. Investing activities include the cash flows related to investments in property, plant and equipment, and other long-term assets. Financing activities include the cash flows related to financing the company’s operations, such as issuing or repurchasing stock or taking out loans.

The statement of equity shows the changes in shareholder equity over a period of time. It starts with the beginning balance of shareholder equity, adds any investments or contributions made by shareholders, subtracts any distributions or dividends paid to shareholders, and adjusts for any changes in the value of equity, such as stock repurchases or changes in accounting principles.

Together, these four financial statements provide a complete picture of a company’s financial performance and position, allowing investors to make informed decisions about whether to invest in a company or not.
