Perl 5 and Perl 6, known as Raku, are two different programming languages with their own unique syntax and features, but they do share some similarities.
Perl 5 is the most commonly used version of Perl and has been around since the late 1980s. It is a powerful, flexible, and expressive language that is widely used for scripting, text processing, system administration, and web development. Perl 5 is heavily focused on backward compatibility, meaning that new versions of Perl 5 place a high value on ensuring that existing code written in previous versions of the language continues to work properly. As a result, the syntax and overall structure of Perl 5 remains fairly consistent from release to release.
Perl 6, on the other hand, is a newer, more modern version of Perl that was released formally in 2015 as Raku. Perl 6 is intended to be more expressive, readable, and extendable than Perl 5. It offers a number of new language features and grammar constructs, such as grammars, junctions, and meta-operators, that allow programmers to write more complex and sophisticated code with greater ease. Perl 6 also offers better support for concurrency, parallelism, and distributed computing compared to Perl 5. Unlike Perl 5, Perl 6 wasn’t primarily focused on retaining backwards compatibility with earlier versions of the language. Instead, it was designed to be a separate, new programming language that drew inspiration from and improved upon Perl 5.
It is worth noting that while Perl 6 was originally intended to be a successor to Perl 5, it ended up being different enough to become a separate language entirely. Perl 6 has its own interpreter and implementation, and programs written in Perl 5 cannot be directly translated to Perl 6 without significant modification. Despite the differences, both Perl 5 and Perl 6 are powerful and versatile languages that can be used to solve a wide variety of programming problems.
